Beach Safety
April 5, 2004
With the coming summer, we can look forward to spending time at the beach, relaxing and enjoying the ocean. Little do most people know that as much fun the shore can be, there is always a chance that harm could come to you, or a loss of property, usually to the hands of passerby. The beach is almost always a fun time for everyone, but a rough tide or unprotected possessions can ruin a vacation.
There is always a chance at the shore that a strong wave could hit, or something could wash into you while in the ocean that could risk injury. When at the beach, always avoid logs and large debris. Even though they may appear harmless, even tiny logs can be extremely dangerous, because they may be waterlogged, and what looks like it weighs about 50 pounds could weigh a ton. Also avoid treading onto rocks and enclosed beaches, because if the tide washes in, you can be trapped until the tide washes out again. Also assume that waves are high enough to reach over rocks and jetties, which could sweep you off your feet and out to sea, so try to stick to high ground. Avoid cliffs and bluffs as well, because the edges are usually slippery and unstable, which could lead to serious injury. Also always remember to dive feet first into water you are unfamiliar with, to avoid landing face first onto a large rock.
Another danger while at the beach is theft. While people are preoccupied with the sun and the surf, it is very easy for someone to slip by and leave with a purse or a bag completely unnoticed. Therefore, a good idea is to leave money or valuables in your car, and keep the keys in a safe place, either somewhere, or leave them with someone you know on the beach while you are busy. As long as you are careful and use a little common sense, you should have a great time at wherever you go for beachside fun.
