Bicycle Safety
With spring in full force, and summer just around the corner, more and more of us are spending time outside. One of the most beneficial, and enjoyable activites outside is bike riding, if you know how to stay safe. While bike riding can be tons of fun if you are cautious, one wrong move can land you in the hospital.
The first step to being a safe bicyclist is realizing that when on the road, your bike is a vehicle, just the same as a car, truck, van, motorcycle, or even a runaway lawn mower. In that respect, you are subject to the same traffic laws that an automobile is, such as staying to the right on the road. While riding, look behind you when can, without swerving, to make sure no one is about to hit you. Remember that pedestrians have the right of way, so let them go when possible, and if not give them audible warning that you are there, so they don't assume you are letting them go. Also avoid road hazards such as parallel sewer grates, oily pavement and speedbumps, such items can easily cause you to lose control of your bike.
And for those of us who are just learning who to take their bikes out for the first time, the youngest of us, biking can be a nervewracking experience. Since children are not used to being up on two thin wheels, and having to do the legwork, they are nowhere near as adept as an adult is on a bicycle, but thats ok. While teaching a child to ride their bike, remember that they have never had to hold themselves in motion on a bike before, so help children take their time with their bikes. Simply teach kids how to be cautious on the road, and you, and your family, will be having fun biking all summer long!
