The Nightwatch Program, Inc. - Crime Prevention At Its Best
Safeguard Your Car from Thieves

If you drive, you probably have at least once or twice thougt about auto theft. Auto theft is rampant across the country, but there are things you can do to help prevent your car driving off in someone elses possesion. It's almost like Crime Prevention by Environmental Design, using the environment around your car to help keep your car where it is. Things like knowing where to park, and simple tips, can help save your automobile.

First off, never leave your keys in the car, or leave an extra pair of keys in the car. With keys in the car, a robber can just waltz in and drive away. Always lock your doors WHENEVER you leave the car, of course. Never leave your engine on, for the same reason, when leaving your car, even for a moment. Also close your windows fully, and turn your wheels toward the curb if possible. Also try to remember to turn your safety brake on, it can help stop your car from being towed. Also avoid leaving your registration in the car, because that makes it more believable that your car is really owned by the guy who just drove off in it.

When you leave your car in a lot, keep it near light, nearly 50% of all auto thefts are at night time. Try to stay somewhere attended, auto thieves don't like having witnesses around. And obviously don't leave valuables in plain sight in the car, that only makes your car more desirable to anyone walking by. You can also consider installing a car alarm if you don't have one already
